DHEA is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands and in your brain. It is the most abundant pro-hormone or building block for hormones in your system. Scientifically speaking DHEA is actually the building block for 50 different hormones, including your major sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone and testosterone This is why DHEA is called the “mother of all hormones.”
As a male testosterone is the specific hormone that affects everything. It effects sex drive, bone density, fat distribution, muscle size and strength and red blood cell production. Your body’s natural production of DHEA varies widely with age. Very low levels are produced before puberty, peak production in your late 20’s or early 30’s, followed by a steady decline in production with advancing age. By the time we reach 70 years of age, we actually only make 20% of the DHEA we did when we were young. This is how testosterone levels plummet as males age. Low testosterone levels or “Low T” are associated with Decreased desire for sex (libido), Diminished erectile quality (particularly nighttime erections), Changes in mood, Reduced intellectual and cognitive function, Fatigue, depression and anger, Decrease in muscle mass and strength, and Increase in abdominal fat mass.
